Superlativo

Este partido es el más importante de la liga. ¿Cómo decir esta frase en inglés? Como en el tema anterior, hay una diferencia dependiendo de la forma del adjetivo. ¡Vamos a verlo!

Se forma de la siguiente manera:

Adjetivos cortos
Si el adjetivo es monosílabo se construye de la siguiente manera: [The + adjetivo + est]

The puma is the fastest mammal in the world. El puma es el mamífero más rápido del mundo
Alex is the tallest kid in his class. Alex es el chico más alto de su clase

¡Atención!
Cuando el adjetivo termina en [consonante + vocal + consonante], la última consonante se duplica: fat – the fattest, big – the biggest…

Adjetivos de dos sílabas con Y
En caso de que el adjetivo acabe en y se cambia y por iest como podemos ver aquí:

She is the luckiest girl in the world
The African elephant is the heaviest mammal.

Adjetivos largos

Si el adjetivo es largo (más de 2 sílabas) se forma así: [the + most + adjetivo]

The Border Collie is the most intelligent dog. El Border Collie es el perro más inteligente
The Taj Mahal is one of the most important tourist attractions in the world. El Taj Mahal es una de las atracciones turísticas más importantes del mundo

Intensificadores

En el caso de los superlativos, también se puede añadir más énfasis con intensificadores como easily y by far:

Today is easily the hottest day. Hoy es fácilmente el día más caluroso
This lake is by far the most beautiful. Este lago es el más bonito por mucho

Excepciones

También hay estas excepciones que se forman de manera diferente y debes aprender de memoria. Hay más, pero vamos a ver estas de momento:

Bad – the worst. This is the worst restaurant in the city. Este es el peor restaurante de la ciudad
Good – the best. This is the best day of my life. Es el mejor día de mi vida

Far – furthest. Neptune is the farthest planet of the Solar System. Neptuno es el planeta más lejano.

Less – least. That’s the least of my problems. Ese es el menor de mis problemas.
