After university I made the decision to go and live in Japan and the experience for myself.
Even I don’t speak Japanese the company that helped me come to Japan said it wasn’t a problem. They helped me buy the flights, rent apartment, organise working papers and they got me the job! Learning the Guitar – A story from a professional
I’ve always been an avid guitar player, I would wake up everyday and play my favourite songs to my mother when I was young. As a teen, I would often play gigs with friends and play at parties. Even as an adult, I still do the same, but now make my way in life with the money I earn from playing.
I made my first album when I was 14, it was called “rock socks”. Imagine punk meets rock and then it shakes hands with Madonna. It was recorded in the music rooms we had at school. It wasn’t kitted out with the latest technology and we didn’t have soundproofing. All we had back then was a fervid passion to make music and to shape the world.
Of course, then you get older and you realise one CD isn’t going to do much, nor two: music can’t change things… in fact now we don’t use CDs, now we don’t even download songs! We almost always get our music from the cloud. Changing technologies have helped musicians in many ways. Now we have a bigger voice, us small people. Now you can record a song with your phone and upload to YouTube, SoundCloud or some other website and get thousands of visits in a matter of days, but music still can’t change the way the world is.
While I think the music world is more open to budding musicians, it’s also a more competitive world. Now anyone with a phone can get out there and communicate to the masses. I suppose it is a question of swings and roundabouts… positives and negatives, you win some, you lose some. If it’s easy for you, it’s easy for Jonny down the road too!
The trick is to never give up, there is a sound out there for everyone. You have to find your niche. I never gave up. Now I am 50 years old and while I am no Beyonce I have a small school of students, I have thousands of views on YouTube and I gig around the UK from time to time.

You are going to read an extract from a magazine article. Six paragraphs have been removed from the extract. Choose from the paragraphs A-G the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use.
Forget about London, think Bristol
Yes. I said it and I meant it! I’m a real fan of Bristol. Why? There are a ton of things to do there because it’s a student city and I always find great bargains in the local markets.
Yes. Your money goes further in Bristol. Things we spend a lot on like food, drinks and rent, are all cheaper.
Bristol is a smaller city, and what’s more, it’s one of the top cities for cycling. There are loads of established bike routes in Bristol, they take you away from cars and out into the countryside, or just straight to work.
It’s also connected to great parts of Britain, you’re two hours from London, Wales and from the deep South West (a natural paradise, with or without rain!). These are better than the connections you get in London.
That’s not forgetting all the street art! It’s the home of Banksy and it has a huge music scene with festivals and live gigs. Maybe this is because they live in the birthplace of the modern chocolate bar or perhaps because it’s full of students!
But seriously, it’s brighter, greener, cheaper, less polluted and more student friendly. I can say no more, I’d always choose it over London. …unless I were an investment banker raking in 8 figures a year. You can experience a great weekend there or you can go out for weeks and weeks at a time.
See you there!
A. I like to think that the quality of life is higher, everything’s a little bit more relaxed and people smile more!
B. Go and experience it, there is something for everyone.
C. Well, apart from virtually always outranking London in ‘best city’ guides, it’s smaller, greener and cheaper.
D. You can also catch a flight to Madrid for less than €80.
E. Bristol has many train lines and even a night bus for those night owls out there!
F. Everyone in London complains about how big it is and how you have to spend so much time travelling.
G. A pint in Bristol is around €4.13 and in London around €4.72. Rent is 51% less expensive and if you fancy eating out in an inexpensive restaurant, expect to pay 20% less.
Read this article about planning a holiday abroad. Then answer the questions choosing the best paragraph for each answer.
Plan a holiday – I think not, sir!
A
I really hate buying cars. Do you know what I mean? What shape, what brand, what type of paint. Boring! Would you like the one with the special super XXP brakes or the ones without? Leather interior or fake leather or plastic? No, no, the leather can’t be ordered today, we can send it to you in 6 weeks.
For me, the unbeatable way to buy a car (and I recently did something just like this) would be to walk in, not for a test-drive, and say “I want that one” and you just point at it with your big fat finger.
B
Well now, when it comes to vacations or “a holiday” you can imagine that I am not up for doing a lot of legwork in order to plan them. I spin the globe I have in my office, use my fat finger and pick where I want to go (I spin again if I land somewhere inhospitable!). So, leave me alone please, I am happy by myself – I don’t want any specially planned holiday.
With this kind of one-stop-shop holiday, you might want to opt for Johnny’s Quick Holidays, they offer a great service. Aside from the obvious no-sweat and no-questions approach, they give you great advice and one-size-fits-all prices. You can go online, give them a phone call or walk into one of the offices they have tucked away in every corner of the planet.
C
You could go away and enjoy a diving holiday at Ocean beach. They don’t hold back at all on the customer service or the buffets. Once I headed out there and managed to get in 10 sessions of diving ,we saw all kinds of fauna and flora on the sea bed and then I ate more food than a sumo wrestler in training. This was an unforgettable experience only a few hours from the airport.
And who better to give a ring than Adventurous Mike, Mike offers some of the most unique and exciting holidays I have seen in my time as a tourist. Mike can take you through the deepest jungles of the amazon to bear witness to a rare mating ritual only known to the natives there, or equally take you out to the city of Madrid and provide you with a tech-meets-map geocaching experience where you need to hunt for treasure and clues in the nooks and crannies of Madrid’s city.
D
If that isn’t your cup of tea, Johnny’s Quick Holidays also has a list of down to earth, relaxing experiences. Take for example Susan’s Silent Escape… I’ll give you a hint……….. That’s it, you don’t make a sound! Everyone there has sworn a vow of silence for one week and any breaking of this rule gets you kicked out. Out in their camp you can enjoy breathtaking sights while on the coast of Tenerife with the most stunning sunsets and what’s more is that you don’t have to listen to the groaning, growling and complaining of family members or spouses.
Either way you’ll have to get in touch with Johnny before packing your bags and running off to some exotic, little known holiday experience as he has all the exclusive contacts!
