The Third Conditional

The 3rd conditional, or type 3 conditional, is used to refer to impossible situations in the past which are contrary to reality. It is used to express the idea of what could have happened if something else had happened. However, that situation didn’t happen, and thus the possibility is impossible. 

To form the 3rd conditional, we use – if + past perfect + conditional perfect. 

Examples

If I hadn’t been in the car, we wouldn’t have crashed.  

If you had studied harder, you would have passed the exam.

We would have eaten earlier if the restaurant had been open.
