The Second Conditional

The 2nd conditional, or type 2 conditional, is essentially like the 1st conditional (check out my other course if you’re not sure about the 1st conditional), but less likely. It is used to refer to an unreal situation, which is now or anytime. The situation is not based on fact, and refers to hypothetical conditions and their probable results. 

To form the 2 conditional, we use – if + past simple + present conditional (would). 

Examples

If I went to Greece, I would eat hummus. 

If they arrived earlier, they’d see the entire film.

We’d never drink alcohol if we lived in Saudi Arabia.
